Drama VIewing at Karakana

Length of Time for this Experience: 1 hour

Summary of Experience:

Get a closer connection to one of Mtoko’s community partner’s, Makini Organization. Makini is an organization working with young people who were previously living on the street. Watch two dramas created by Makini reflecting community issues in Tanzania and have a one-on-one discussion with the performers. Have a question about community life in Tanzania? We will connect your question to a member before your arrival, and an answer will be ready on your arrival. A playbill of the performance and a journal with messages from the performers themselves will be given at the end of the experience.

What will we do?

Meet your host for Understanding Community Through Drama and begin by meeting the performers from Makini and getting a playbill of the two dramas that will be performed. Your coordinator will share before each drama how the drama is related to a social issue in Tanzania and each performer will share the inspiration behind the performance. After each drama, a dialogue and questions is welcome between the guests and the performers. Your host will provide you with not only pictures and stories reflecting the theme of the drama, but other message from the partners we work. At the end of both dramas, a journal with messages from the performers will be given.

Meet Victor Cosmis &  Juma Habibu, Your Experience Coordinators
At our day and evening tailor made stopover experience in Dar es Salaam.

My name is Victor Cosmos and I am 22 years old and live in Dar es Salaam. I was born in Mbeya.  I became interested in drama when I joined Makini Organization, an organization working young people living  on the streets in Dar es Salaam, in 2010. It was there I found the power of story telling through drama and dance. My passion grew and I realized drama could be used to bring people together. It is important to remove stigma from the community because I believe we all have the power to make a difference.

My name is JumaHabibu and I am 21 years old and I live in Dar es Salaam. I was born in Tanga. I became interested in drama when I found a group of members from Makini Organization performing. I became interested to join and learn. I joined Makini in 2011 and saw the connection between the dramas and my own life. I was inspired by how dramas could reflect reality. I believe it is important to remove stigma in society because I want people to have equal rights and live in peace.

Each experience is jointly run by a Mtoko staff member and a coordinator. We seek wherever possible to provide coordinator trainings to people affected by stigma.

For every experience you book, someone in need is given the opportunity to connect

let's travel shall we...
